• Compose panels with a background and foreground

• Use micron pens or sharpies of different line weights to neatly define lines and shapes

• Space can be divided into a foreground and background

• Artists plan their art using an erasable medium before using a permanent medium

In this learning segment, students created one-page comics featuring problem-solving insect characters they previously invented. Students created thumbnail sketches of each panel, focusing on how they can convey the beginning, middle, and end of their story through the setting and action of the characters. We viewed examples of short narrative comics, discussing the use of foreground and background in each composition.
