Pattern Exploration

M.S. 255 Salk School of Science

Medium: Micron pen, sharpie marker

Age: 6th grade

Students will be able to:

  • Use micron pens to make a variety of lines (straight, curvy, spiral, zigzag, etc)

  • Use micron pens to draw a variety of geometric and organic shapes

  • Create linear and radial patterns through the repetition of various visual elements

  • Use micron pens in different sizes to create different line weights

Students will understand that:

  • Contrast in line type, shape, size, and value can be used to create more visual interest in patterns

  • Rhythm can be created by repeating similar elements, which moves the viewer’s eye across the work

  • Experimentation is an essential first step when beginning to work on a larger art project

Students were introduced to relevant elements of art and principles of design, such as line, shape, rhythm, contrast, and pattern, which they used to build different patterns in preparation for a larger project incorporating patterns and other imagery.
